VR Device Management – The MDM Guide

Published

VR Device Management can be tricky. This is why we’ve put together this MDM Guide to help you navigate the fantastic tools that can be used to manage multiple VR headsets at once.

Attempting to use multiple VR Headsets at once without a centralised management system is a recipe for disaster. Manually updating software and applications takes a long time. It’s easy to do it on one VR headset, but when you’ve got 50, it’s almost impossible.

This is where MDM Platforms such as ManageXR and ArborXR step in.

Since Meta Horizon Managed Services is free to use as of February 20th 2026, MDMs are now integrating directly with HMS. This usually works by enrolling headsets through Meta HMS, and then using the MDMs for content management and the rest of their features.

The Features of MDM Platforms

Mobile Device Management platforms allow you to manage your entire fleet of VR Headsets from one centralised application on a computer. These platforms have several features, including:

  • WiFi Management: MDMs manage headsets via the internet, removing the need to plug headsets into a PC.
  • Kiosk Mode: Headsets can be locked to a single application so users don’t get lost in menus.
  • Custom Launchers: Use a branded home environment, where users only see the apps they’re allowed to use.
  • Remote Content Distribution: Apps & Content can be installed remotely to 100’s of devices at once.
  • Remote Commands: Adjust headset volume and brightness, switch headsets off and more.
  • Remote Viewing/Casting: See what users are seeing in the headset and help them troubleshoot.
  • Headset Diagnostics: Check stats such as headset/controller battery levels, device temperature & more.

An Agnostic Approach

MDM Platforms bridge the gap between Meta Quest, Pico and HTC VIVE. They can work across all of them and aren’t tied to specific hardware platforms. This makes your kit futureproof and doesn’t lock you into a singular headset manufacturer.

This gives you the freedom to pivot. For instance, if the time comes to upgrade and you decide you don’t like something about your Meta Quest fleet, you can switch to a Pico fleet without disrupting your management workflow.

Privacy & Security

MDMs also allow you to track telemetry data via their built-in analytics. This can be used to track session duration without tracking sensitive data, such as eye-tracking and room-mapping data. Headsets can also be wiped remotely, which comes in incredibly useful if a headset is stolen or lost in transit.

Top VR MDMs

The two biggest VR MDMs at the moment are ManageXR and ArborXR. They both turn a chaotic pile of headsets into a professional, streamlined fleet. Both MDMs excel at getting the headaches of technology out of the way so your team can focus on the experience. As a supplier of both platforms, we don’t just provide the license; our dedicated team can pre-install the software on your VR Kit, so everything is ready to go right out of the box.
